In collaboration with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Signum Classics has released a series of recordings by this esteemed ensemble, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, that presents classical music in affordable packages. This 2011 album in the line offers the orchestral suite from Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's groundbreaking ballet, Swan Lake, and Sergey Rachmaninov's final masterpiece, the Symphonic Dances, played with energy and feeling in concert. While this CD is certainly a worthwhile introduction to the music of these Russian composers, particularly for beginners who would like to sample Swan Lake before taking the plunge and buying a complete recording, it will seem quite modest to more experienced listeners, who most likely own other recordings of the same pieces. Furthermore, while the sound is good and perfectly acceptable for casual listeners' purposes, it isn't exceptional, so this package faces a serious challenge in the face of many first-rate audiophile recordings.
