The interplay between Rob Frayne (particularly when he plays tenor) and dry-toned guitarist Steve Fisk is the main reason to acquire this disc. The music ranges from the Lennie Tristano-ish "Mello for My Lou Bro" (which utilizes the chord changes of "How Deep Is the Ocean") to some brief group improvisations and quirky post-bop originals. The four Canadian musicians are excellent, very alert to each other's playing, and skillful improvisers. Three of the players contributed new songs, and the four musicians often seem to think as one. Despite the lack of big names and familiar song titles, this is a stimulating session well worth taking a chance on.
