The Wake's third single continues the lightening of their initially foreboding post-punk gloom into a more wistful and much poppier sound. New bassist Alex MacPherson is considerably more in the background than his predecessor, future Primal Scream leader Bobby Gillespie, had been, and although Carolyn Allen's chorused keyboards are still the focus of the arrangements, mono-named singer Caesar's guitar takes most of the lead lines. "Talk About the Past" is downright hyperactive, with a careening guitar hook and Caesar's breathy vocals battling with Steven Allen's manic drums for space in the front of the mix. The dub mix on the flip, "Everybody Works So Hard," is largely unimpressive, though the addition of a Harold Budd-like ambient piano part by Durutti Column leader Vini Reilly is an inspired touch. A 7" version of this single, with edited versions of both songs, was also released.
