Take 3 Girls: A Tribute to Tori Amos, Bjork and P.J. Harvey, a three-disc tribute to three of alternative rock's most definitive female artists, doesn't understand that providing more of something doesn't necessarily make it good, or that the best intentions don't always make a tribute worthwhile. These tribute compilations are always iffy prospects at best, and Take 3 Girls holds up that tradition with its slick productions and lackluster vocals. Perhaps because her material is the most traditionally singer/songwriter-oriented, Tori Amos' work holds up best to these "tributes"; the versions of "Cornflake Girl," "Crucify," "Baker Baker," and "Silent All These Years" obviously don't compare with Amos' renditions, but they still have a kernel of authenticity to them. PJ Harvey and Björk's work isn't quite so lucky, though: while the vocalist singing "Down by the Water," "Dress," and "Water" doesn't exactly try to ape Harvey's singing style, neither does she have a distinctive sound of her own. And the versions of "Violently Happy," "One Day," "Human Behaviour," and other Björk songs are just off enough to sound cheap and grating. A dull, frustrating, and overly long collection, the money that could be spent on Take 3 Girls would still be far better used on an album from any one of the women the album is supposed to celebrate.
