Swingin' Piano Review

by Scott Yanow

Despite its title, this Folkways LP does not feature any swing-oriented piano. Instead side one emphasizes such stride specialists as Herman Chittison, Garland Wilson, Cliff Jackson and Fats Waller with some boogie-woogie provided by Albert Ammons, and side two switches to novelty ragtime from the likes of Frank Banta, Vera Guilaroff, Pauline Alpert and Monia Liter. Since this album is full of rare material (such as Eubie Blake's 1921 recording of "Ma") it is worth a search despite its lack of focus.
