Bill Allred's Classic Jazz Band is a good-natured and swinging group who plays swing and some Dixieland, often utilizing a mixture of jammed ensembles and arranged sections. Although the music on this CD is certainly full of spirit and there are some fine trombone solos from both Bill Allred and his son, John Allred, unfortunately the two trumpeters (Charlie Bertini and Bob Pickwood) often get out of control, trying to scream high notes à la Maynard Ferguson. This would be fine except for the many misses, which make the music sound sloppy at times. Terry Myers is fine on clarinet and tenor and the rhythm section swings (although without much subtlety). If additional versions of some of these songs had been performed, chances are that the music would be on a higher level than this enjoyable but so-so effort.
