Here is a group no one has heard of. Starting in 1939 and continuing up through 1941, the Svenska Hotkvintetten was an all-string swing quintet closely inspired by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Prior to the release of most of their recordings on this CD, none of the group's performances had ever been available outside of Sweden. Violinist Emil Iwring was almost Grappelli's equal at the time, while Sven Stiberg and Folke Eriksberg split the solo work; a third acoustic guitarist and a bassist completed the group. This CD from the Swedish Dragon label is quite generous with 27 selections, most of it falling into the category of hot swing. This is one that all collectors of prebop jazz should want to acquire.
