Surf Crazy: Original Surfin' Hits Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The title of Surf Crazy: Original Surf Hits is a little misleading. There aren't many big hits on the 29-track collection, only approximations of big hits -- Billy Strange's "Hava Tequila" not the Champs' "Tequila"; the Breakers' "Surf Bird," not the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird"; Billy Strange's "Walk, Don't Run '64," not the Ventures' "Walk Don't Run." As a result, the disc is really frustrating for casual fans. Hardcore surf collectors might find a couple of gems buried on this disc, but there are so many mediocrities cluttering the collection that it's tough work to find them.
