AllMusic Review by

2001 marked the tenth anniversary of DAME, previously known as Distribution Ambiances Magnétiques Etcetera. For the occasion, the distributor of Quebec avant-garde music wanted to strengthen its image as a record label family uniting a group of like-minded imprints. SuperBoom culls 33 tracks from as many albums released between 1999 and 2001 on Ambiances Magnétiques, Ohm Éditions, Monsieur Fauteux M'Entendez-Vous?, and AMIM. The sampler serves three main purposes: to present the fall 2001 releases (nine in total); to pick up where the last Ambiances Magnétiques chronological collection (Ambiances Magnétiques, Vol. 4: Mystère) left off; and to establish DAME as a "mother label" of sorts, since SuperBoom comes with a DAME catalog number, a premiere. In order to give everyone a place on the CD, artistic director Joane Hétu preferred short tracks, editing excerpts when necessary (half of the album). There are worlds sitting between the delicate songs of Geneviève Letarte and Pierre-André Arcand's sounding book recordings. Yet, the track selection and order have been well-thought-out -- enough to make the "family" idea stick. All these artists do share something more than just recording for the same label (or group of labels, depending on your point-of-view). Still, the listener will get only a vague idea of some of the albums represented, but they might come out of SuperBoom with the impulsion to dive into DAME's catalog and try to make a few discoveries on their own.
