While actually a split single with the Field Trip, there's little doubt who has pride of place here, not least because Sonic actually plays on the Field Trip's recording. Done for Christmas 1992, Sonic decided to get into the season with a version of "Santa Claus" -- not any traditional carol, but a cover of a song by legendary '60s garage monsters the Sonics. Even more interesting is the identity of the guitarist helping Sonic -- Kevin Cowan, former player with the Darkside, formed by ex-Spacemen 3 player Pete Bain (to make things crazier, Cowan himself was replaced by Richard Formby, who had just left Spectrum). Background details aside, the cover combines all the worldly desires of the song ("a cute little honey, drugs and money") with lots of buried feedback and a twinkly lead keyboard melody. Trippy in the best all around sense, and there's even a holiday greeting from Sonic at the end.
