AllMusic Review by

As oldies radio stations have progressively played newer music, few bother to reach back to the first decade of rock & roll in the '50s. Serial compilations like Super Oldies of the 50's, then, provide fans with a good starting place to return to doo wop and rock & roll's beginning and create their own version of oldies radio. A solid set list graces Super Oldies of the 50's, Vol. 2, including favorites like Danny & the Juniors' "Rock & Roll Is Here to Stay," Lloyd Price's version of "Stagger Lee," Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," and Dion & the Belmonts' "A Teenager in Love." The names of the groups themselves, the Monotones, the Quin-Tones, and the Teen Queens, are enough to evoke nostalgia; while the songs they produced, "Book of Love," "Down the Aisle of Love," and "Eddie My Love," respectfully, focus simply on a guy and girl in love. While some listeners may be less familiar with Skip & Flip ("It Was I") and the Charts ("Deserie"), the addition of less familiar fare actually provides a fuller picture of the era. While Super Oldies of the 50's, Vol. 2 is quite enjoyable as a collection, the series lacks liner notes and the sound quality is less than pristine. Vol. 2 will nonetheless allow the listener to re-create a nearly hourlong version of oldies radio, '50s style.
