Super Hits, Vol. 2 Review

by William Ruhlmann

This ten-song compilation is Vol. 2 in the sense that it contains David Allen Coe's less successful "super hits." For "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile" and "The Ride," look for Super Hits (Columbia 53311). The biggest hits here are "Long Haired Redneck" and "She Used to Love Me a Lot," both of which made the Country Top 40. The rest are minor chart entries or worse. But that's not to say there isn't some characteristically provocative material here, including the Willie Nelson duet "I've Already Cheated on You" and "Now I Lay Me Down to Cheat," a song that manages to mix infidelity with prayer. Coe was always a near-parody of a country singer, and the humor content is high, but so is the fun. And if you want to hear strange, wait for the duet with Lacy J. Dalton on Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" that closes the album.
