Rhino's Summer Hits plays like a summertime mix tape with slightly better production values, gathering sunny-day singles like Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime," Billy Stewart's soulful rendition of "Summertime," and the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City." The quintessential summertime band, the Beach Boys, are represented by "Surfin' Safari" and "Surfin'," while the Surfaris' "Wipe Out" and "Surfer Joe" carry the surf theme through the rest of the album. From fun, bouncy tracks like the Rivieras' "California Sun" to Chad & Jeremy's poignant "A Summer Song," Summer Hits packs a lot of sun and surf into its relatively brief running time. Though it doesn't offer many surprises, the collection does provide a fun, familiar soundtrack to summertime fun.
