Strictly Breaks, Vol. 10 Review

by Andy Kellman

Compared to similar vinyl-based series like Ultimate Breaks and Beats and Dusty Fingers, the Strictly Breaks series is often more satisfying to the average set of ears. This is because the average selection tends to have more going for it than just the break within it. The breadth is considerable, taking just about every rhythmic form of music from the '60s through the early '80s into consideration. Another benefit is that you can enjoy this series without having a fleeting interest in the rap tracks that sampled the content. Highlights of the tenth volume of the series includes Bernard Wright's "Haboglabotribin," Donald Byrd's "Dominos," Dorothy Ashby's "Cause I Need It," the Detroit Emeralds' "You're Getting a Little Too Smart," and the Fatback Band's "How to Dance."
