AllMusic Review by

Stretch, Scott Walker's first album for CBS, purports to be a detour into country music, but it is a side road that Walker decided not to pursue thoroughly. Only a handful of songs, like Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got to Memphis" and Mike Newbury's "Sunshine," are genuine country songs, and the remainder of the album consists of mainstream pop and folk-rock songs that are quite similar to his latter-day Phillips albums. The difference is that Walker sounds more committed on this record, singing with a greater passion than on any record since Til the Band Comes In, but that still doesn't save Stretch from being anything more than a curiosity for dedicated fans.
