One of the BBE label's first compilations, Strange Games and Things -- selected by label head Peter Adarkwah -- features a wide-ranging set of buried classics and neglected obscurities, most of which would re-surface on later sets from the label. Naturally, Love Unlimited Orchestra's elegantly funky "Strange Games and Things" kicks off the disc, followed by an assortment of '70s and '80s soul-funk-disco. Unlike most compilations that attempt to dig far beneath the surface of well-known hits, absolutely none of it is weak or even middling, from Eddie Kendricks' proto-disco classic "Girl You Need a Change of Mind," to Gwen McCrae's oft-sampled "90% of Me Is You," to "Bring You Sweet Loving Back" by Starpoint (whose catalog runs way deeper than "Object of My Desire"). Released in 1997, the disc might be hard to find, but most of its contents showed up on Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez's Strange Games and Funky Things, Vol. 3 (which features the tracks in mixed and unmixed forms).
