Folks who love radio hits of the '70s and one-hit wonders remember Stories as the band that scored a smash with the song "Brother Louie," a tale of interracial romance that was later adopted as the theme song of Louis C.K.'s hit TV series Louie. Music fans with a taste for smart pop that fell through the cracks recall that Stories was the band that featured Michael Brown, founder of the Left Banke, after he parted ways with the "Walk Away Renee" hitmakers. Stories Untold: The Very Best of Stories is a 19-song collection that offers a representative sampling of the many phases of Stories, going beyond their sole hit. In addition to tracks from Stories' three albums -- 1972's Stories and 1973's About Us, released during Michael Brown's time in the band, and 1973's Traveling Underground, with vocalist Ian Lloyd taking over leadership of the group after Brown's departure -- the album features a rare Michael Brown solo track, two songs with Brown backing former Left Banke vocalist Steve Martin, and four solo numbers from Ian Lloyd. Offering a "before, during, and after" portrait of the group, Stories Untold: The Very Best of Stories fills in the gaps in the tale of a band that had more to offer than just one hit single.
