This live date from a European concert features the veteran alto saxophonist with his enjoyable but short-lived European Rhythm Machine band, featuring George Gruntz on piano, bassist Henri Texier and drummer Daniel Humair. Woods starts with a surprisingly avant-gardish arrangement of "Freedom Jazz Dance," followed by a straight-ahead take of Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments," which stretches to 17 minutes without losing steam. Woods' enticing ballad "And When We're Young," dedicated to Robert Kennedy, is inexplicably credited on the cover to the late senator; this goof plus the lack of recording date or location seem to infer that the CD must be a bootleg. But with so few recordings in existence (especially currently in print) of this edition of the ERM, this release is worth the search.
