Step by Step: The Complete Pop Hits Review

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The subtitle "The Complete Pop Hits" suggests this 2018 Real Gone Music release concentrates solely on crossover singles, thereby skimming the surface of Joe Simon's long, rich career. That's not the case. By concentrating on the singles that made Billboard's Hot 100 instead of their R&B charts, Real Gone whittles Simon's lengthy list of hit singles into a manageable double-disc set that manages to feature all of his biggest R&B hits in its 35 tracks. Opening with 1964's "My Adorable One" and ending with 1976's "Come Get to This," Step by Step touches on nearly every trend between supper club R&B and disco, which means this is far more than a sampler anchored on 'The Chokin' Kind," "Drowning in the Sea of Love," and "Power of Love." Instead, it's the most comprehensive -- and best -- career overview of Joe Simon assembled to date.
