Stateless Review

by Kurt Morris

Stateless is a collaboration of the music of Early Day Miners and Unwed Sailor and filmmaker Chris Bennett. The members of both bands combined to form one group and wrote music to coincide with Bennett's 30-minute movie, which is viewable on the CD. While the movie portion seems somewhat abstract and vague, showcasing scenes of pastoral landscapes and vacation spots from Bennett's traveling journeys, the music helps to carry the film to a tolerable level and thereby serves as the narrative of the movie. Nevertheless, on its own the music also soothes and flows and appropriately sounds like a very mellowed-out version of each band. Other comparisons might be made to Low or the Album Leaf. Quite delicate and deliberate, this is perfect music to sleep to or play in the background; however, on its own it can hardly stand. Yet, seeing how it was made with the express purpose of operating with the film, both bands should see their work as successful.
