A fusion of nature recordings, dance, new age, and world music, Spirit of Eastern Chill Out collects six epic tracks on as many discs. Meridian's "Indonesian Rainforest" takes its cue from that region's indigenous music and climate, blending gamelan-inspired melodies with the sounds of the rain forest and subtle electronic textures; Ling Chui's "Dolphins and Whales (Sonar Mix)" does the same thing with dolphin and whale cries, blending them with aquatic synths until they create a beautiful but alien soundscape; and Pil Pil's "Ocean Surf (Tsang Remix)" combines gently crashing waves with limpid keyboards. The other three tracks have a more new agey bent and sound a little predictable because of that, but Peace Action's "Calming Tibetan Waterfalls (Buddhist Mix)," Soul Motion's "Gentle Waves," and Paktok Orchestra's "Asian Harvest" are pretty enough. Since each track averages out at about 40 minutes, listening to the entire Spirit of Eastern Chill Out set might be too much to handle at once, but fans of soothing, Eastern-inspired instrumentals should find quite a bit to listen to here.
