Andy LaVerne may very well be one of the best kept secrets in jazz, especially for his prolific number of fine recordings for Steeplechase. However, his Spirit of '76 fusion outing from 1976 is rather dated, due to the use of multiple electronic keyboards and a set of not particularly memorable originals by the band. That shouldn't be considered a knock to LaVerne or fellow participants saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, bassist Mike Richmond, drummer Jeff Brillinger, and guitarist Bill Washer, all of whom have long since made their mark in the jazz world. But fans of Laverne will likely be able to bypass this budget label release, available in the early '90s as a Four Star CD.
