The most noteworthy aspect to this CD is that it shows that not all Russian jazz groups played avant-gartde music. The Allegro Jazz Ensemble (a medium-sized band) performs a variety of contemporary jazz styles including some fusion, Chick Corea-influenced acoustic music and the hard-driving "Sphinx." The exact personnel is unfortunately not given and this release is actually a "best of" set taken from several 1980's recordings. The musicianship is impressive with saxophonist Igor Butman taking honors although the compositions are generally not as interesting as the solos. An above average (if not overly distinctive) modern mainstream release.
