Although bassist Paul Brown is the leader of this quartet from Connecticut, he does not take much solo space or contribute any of the songs. Instead, he sounds quite content to accompany the lead voices (vibraphonist Dean Carbone and pianist Norm Gagne) and to hold the group together. The quartet performs seven jazz standards plus such obscurities as Barry Harris' "Nascimento" (used as a closing theme), Sahib Shihab's "Rue de la Harp," and a pair of Cedar Walton tunes ("Hindsight" and "Fiesta Espagnol"). The music is straight-ahead hard bop that is interpreted at a high level and sometimes reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet, with some of the other highlights including "Speak Low," "Whisper Not," and "Django."
