Like Juan Gabriel, Alejandro Fernandez or Luis Miguel, Ana Gabriel is a singer who can switch effortlessly from state-of-the-art Latin pop to traditional ranchera music. Her eclecticism brings variety to her live shows, besides allowing her to alternate genres in her studio recordings. A virtual declaration of independence for the soft-spoken Gabriel, SOY COMO SOY ("I am just the way I am") finds her firmly planted in pop territory, guided by the masterful hand of super producer Emilio Estefan Jr. Gabriel composed some of the songs at hand, with contributions by Estefan himself, as well as renowned pop composer Kike Santander.
Santander brings an underlying, military-march-like beat to the romantic lament of "Si Me Faltaras," while Estefan combines Spanish flamenco influences with cumbia bravado on the spicy "No a Pedir Perdon," a tune you would expect to hear Gloria Estefan sing. With Gabriel, however, the material becomes of secondary nature. Listening to her gritty, raspy voice is the real delight here, no matter what genre she might choose.
