In addition to Rolling Stone-affiliated volumes and assorted condensed variations on the same theme, Time Life's Sounds of the Eighties series also spawned year-specific discs, each of which takes a fairly broad swipe at mainstream hits with little concern for stylistic cohesion. The 1989 installment features Tears for Fears' "Sowing the Seeds of Love," Mike + the Mechanics' "The Living Years," Tone-Loc's "Funky Cold Medina," Michael Damian's "Rock On," Love & Rockets' "So Alive," and White Lion's "When the Children Cry." For better or worse, the disc does represent the most popular songs of 1989 -- so you can't really pin the blame on Time Life here.
