In addition to Rolling Stone-affiliated volumes and assorted condensed variations on the same theme, Time Life's Sounds of the Eighties series also spawned year-specific discs, each of which takes a fairly broad swipe at mainstream hits with little concern for stylistic cohesion. The 1980 installment features Jermaine Jackson's "Let's Get Serious," the Pretenders' "Brass in Pocket," Gary Numan's "Cars," Olivia Newton-John's "Magic," Christopher Cross' "Sailing," and Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Like most of the other volumes, it's randomly sequenced: who would play (or listen to) a club-oriented Jermaine Jackson single between the Pretenders and a Fleetwood Mac ballad?
