AllMusic Review by

Listed under Bing Crosby's name, though it includes contributions from many vocalists and bands, The Sound of the Movies features the complete songs from six different films, four from the early '30s (the first disc) and two from the mid-'40s (the second). The first film is 1930's King of Jazz, and from the songs within, it's surely no more a jazz film than any other Hollywood product of the time. Most of the songs feature Paul Whiteman with various side groups, only one of which includes Crosby himself. Brother Cros takes over the limelight for The Big Broadcast of 1932, with "Dinah," "Please," and "Here Lies Love." The other two from the '30s, College Humor and Too Much Harmony, are period pieces with all the nostalgia and silliness listeners could expect from songs like "Learn to Croon" and "Down the Old Ox Road." On the second disc, Star Spangled Rhythm starts out with a bang -- songs from Dick Powell, the Golden Gate Quartet, Betty Hutton, Slim & Slam, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson -- though Crosby appears on only one, "Old Glory." Some of the best material on the entire two-disc set comes last, compiled from 1946's Blue Skies, starring Crosby and Fred Astaire. The pair duet on "A Couple of Song and Dance Men," Astaire does "Puttin' on the Ritz" himself, and Crosby croons "Getting Nowhere," "Say It Isn't So," and "Blue Skies" solo. In the end, The Sound of the Movies is much more fun for nostalgia buffs and die-hard Crosby collectors than straight-ahead vocal fans.
