The debut album from a women's drumming circle with heavy African and Caribbean influences, Souls A'Gathered's greatest strength is the feminine energy behind it. The music is often soulful and draws on many cultural traditions and language. Nearly a cappella vocals create smooth harmonies that have round, buttery tones. The drumming is a nice accompaniment, but does not show the skill or precision of many other pan-African bands. This recording sounds like a group of women who have gathered, somewhat spontaneously, to celebrate heritage and power as much as music, and as that, it is a successful and pleasant work.
