One of the more underrated voices in all of rock would have to be Glenn Hughes. Although he's been a member (albeit briefly) of latter incarnations of two of rock's most renowned rock acts, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, Hughes' talents remain largely unrecognized. Which is quite a shame -- especially when he still possesses quite a set of pipes, as evidenced by his first-ever DVD release, Soulfully Live in the City of Angels. Recorded live at Sound Image Studio in North Hollywood on January 11, 2004, the set is comprised of both classics and new tunes. And it quickly becomes apparent that Hughes has put together quite a backing band -- which includes Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, who has long been recognized as one of the top drummers of modern times. The intimate setting (with a crowd comprised of mostly friends) adds quite a bit to the performance as well, as you can sense the members continuously feeding off each other throughout the performance. Standouts include such oft-overlooked Purple nuggets as "Getting' Tighter" (which somehow manages to out-funk the original "Come Taste the Band" version) and "Mistreated," as well as such recent selections as a tribute to John Bonham, "Higher Places," and "Can't Stop the Flood." Soulfully Live in the City of Angels is the best and most vibrant release that any Purple alumni (or the current version of Purple, for that matter) have issued in quite some time.
