AllMusic Review by

There might be no rhyme or reason behind the song selection for BMG Special Productions' The Soulful Sounds of the '70s, but it remains a very entertaining sampling of '70s soul hits from the BMG/RCA vaults. A few of the cuts haven't aged particularly well, but they're far outweighed by fine singles like the Five Stairsteps' "O-o-h Child," the Main Ingredient's "Everybody Plays the Fool," Tyrone Davis' "Without You In My Life," the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl" and Atlantic Starr's "I'll Remember You." It's still a little skimpy and uneven, but for budget-minded casual fans of smooth '70s soul, this one's worth a listen.
