This volume features a nice sampling of 1960s and '70 tracks, and even some from the '80s and '90s, of various female singers who mined that rare turf between jazz and soul. Highlights include Dinah Washington's "What a Difference a Day Makes," Etta James' "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," Esther Phillips' medley of "There You Go Again" and "Stormy Monday," Nancy Wilson's "(You Don't Know) How Glad I Am" and Nina Simone's "Do What You Gotta Do." Selections from Patti Austin, Rachelle Ferrell, Dianne Reeves, Jean Carn, Dee Dee Bridgewater with Norman Connors, Randy Crawford, Angela Bofill, Marlena Shaw and Gloria Lynne (doing a rare vocal version of the instrumental "Watermelon Man") round out the collection.
