AllMusic Review by

Consisting of over a dozen volumes, the Bellevue label's Soul series is riddled with poor live recordings and woefully inferior studio re-recordings, the latter of which are not specified in the track listings. These should be avoided, as there are many series and box sets -- such as Soul Hits of the '70s, Sweet Soul Music, and Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience -- that are legitimate. The inferior re-recordings on Soul: When a Man Loves a Woman include Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," the Chi-Lites' "Have You Seen Her," the Miracles' "I Second That Emotion," and Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up."
