AllMusic Review by

Consisting of over a dozen volumes, the Bellevue label's Soul series is riddled with poor live recordings and woefully inferior studio re-recordings, the latter of which are not specified in the track listings. These should be avoided, as there are many series and box sets -- such as Soul Hits of the '70s, Sweet Soul Music, and Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience -- that are legitimate. The Drifters' "Some Kind of Wonderful," Cornelius Brothers' "Treat Her Like a Lady," Tyrone Davis' "Turn Back the Hands of Time," and Sam & Dave's "Respect" are among the re-recordings on Soul: Stand by Me, a typically lousy volume in the series.
