Soul Spectrum: Radio Sessions Review

by John Bush

There've been dozens of good soul mixes made, but few concentrating on the late '70s and early '80s. London radio DJ Greg Edwards has not only an encyclopedic knowledge of the scene, but also the good sense to not dig so deep that he ends up with a spate of bland obscurities. Soul Spectrum: Radio Sessions focuses on downbeat disco and the smoother side of soul, including middle-level hits from a few great artists of the era; "The Payback" by James Brown and "People Make the World Go Round" by the Stylistics are the only real familiar songs, leaving much room for barely familiar but good-sounding tracks. Highlights come with a nearly nine-minute "Runaway Love" by Linda Clifford, the two-part "Party Down" by Little Beaver, and "Over & Over" by Sylvester.
