AllMusic Review by

Consisting of over a dozen volumes, the Bellevue label's Soul series is riddled with poor live recordings and woefully inferior studio re-recordings, the latter of which are not specified in the track listings. These should be avoided, as there are many series and box sets -- such as Soul Hits of the '70s, Sweet Soul Music, and Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience -- that are legitimate. Among the selections on Soul: Soul Man that are not the real deal: the Impressions' "It's All Right," the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl," the Supremes' "The Happening," and the Jackson 5's "A Change Is Gonna Come," the last of which sounds worse than boots in a dryer.
