Not as thorough as the “best-of” compilations that surfaced during the late ‘90s and early 2000s, S.O.U.L. is a budget-line disc that contains ten highlights from Bill Withers’ albums. While his biggest hits -- “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Lovely Day” -- are here, it does not include a couple other Top Ten R&B singles. It skips past some of Withers’ best album cuts, too -- “I Can’t Write Left-Handed” and “Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?” are among the missing. If you’re looking for the big three mentioned above and don’t care about digging much deeper, this will do the job (cheaply).
