AllMusic Review by

Consisting of over a dozen volumes, the Bellevue label's Soul series is riddled with poor live recordings and woefully inferior studio re-recordings, the latter of which are not specified in the track listings. These should be avoided, as there are many series and box sets -- such as Soul Hits of the '70s, Sweet Soul Music, and Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience -- that are legitimate. The substandard material on Soul: Mama Used to Say includes Junior's "Mama Used to Say," Barry White's "Under the Influence of Love," A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie," Andrea True's "More, More, More," and Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free."
