Like its predecessors, it's hard to discern why a particular song was chosen for inclusion on EMI-Capitol Special Markets' Soul Classics, Vol. 6, but that doesn't stop it from being a reasonably entertaining sampler of '70s and '80s soul. Because it covers so much ground without any real purpose, the collection is a little uneven, but there are so many good singles -- including Syl Johnson's "Take Me to the River," Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand the Rain," Bobby Womack's "That's the Way I Feel About Cha," Cornelius Bros. & Sister Rose's "Too Late to Turn Back Now," Al Green's "You Ought to Be with Me" and Ike & Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" -- that Soul Classics, Vol. 6 ranks as a first-rate budget-priced collection.
