Soul Brothers & Sisters of the 60's Review

by Stephen Cook

K-Tel are back to their hits-loving ways, but this time out the spotlight is squarely on the chart-topping soul sounds of the '60s. And this is no usual-suspects outing, as the roundup in question mostly features relatively obscure hitmakers like Ruby & the Romantics ("Our Day Will Come"), Friends of Distinction ("Grazing in the Grass"), and Philly vocal group Brenda & the Tabulations ("Dry Your Eyes"). Another Philly sensation, vocal duo Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford, chime in with their Top 20 cut "I Need Your Loving," while second-tier girl group the Exciters ("Tell Him") deliver one of their middling hits, "I Want You to Be My Boy." Those in need of some real marquee names need not worry, though; the mix also finds room for the 5th Dimension's mega-smash "Age of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and the Platters' late-period gem "With This Ring." A paltry yet potent disc that's best enjoyed at a bargain price.
