Fresh off of her exploration of American country & western sounds, Japanese bossa nova master Lisa Ono moved on to incorporate American soul into her extensive repertoire of genres converted to bossa nova. On Soul & Bossa, she covers a remarkable amount of ground, from Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" to Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," and from Marvin Gaye's sublime "What's Going On" to James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)." All of it is put into a light groove, a light beat, and a stylish mix of soft vocals and easy instrumentation. To Ono's credit, it all works out in the end.
