It's difficult to argue with a track listing that includes so many soul classics, but the compilation Soul: Angel of the Morning ranges a bit too far (from the Ad-Libs to Leroy Hutson to Al Jarreau!) to make for a solid compilation. True, any listener looking for a few of the following oft-heard classics -- the Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love," Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl," Lee Dorsey's "Ya-Ya," Ben E. King's "Stand by Me," the Platters' "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," Brook Benton's "Rainy Night in Georgia" -- could do much worse than pick this one up. Hearing these bunched together, though, simply doesn't make sense; a better job of sequencing could've pulled it off.
