The lone release from the short-lived Alkaline could easily pass for an unreleased Versus track -- not surprising, given that Versus frontman Richard Baluyut produced the single for his Remora label (not to mention that Alkaline vocalist Connie Lovatt later joined Versus' Fontaine Toups in the excellent Containe). The trio's brand of brooding, sinewy indie rock is thoroughly emblematic of the N.Y.C. underground scene of the early '90s, marrying cotton-candy vocals and pop-friendly hooks to post-punk angst and aggression -- although the Versus comparisons are unavoidable, "Soon" is an undeniably wonderful song that slowly but surely builds to an ecstatic climax. It's a shame Alkaline dissolved so quickly, because there's every indication here that they could have been contenders.
