The Robin Anderson Big Band was formed in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area in 1991, and this was its first recording. The band is strongly influenced by Count Basie's, and probably performs too many of Basie's typical tunes on this set, including "Splanky," "Every Day I Have the Blues," "April in Paris," and other songs in the Basie style. The musicianship is excellent, but no real surprises occur and the soloists are not overly memorable. Singer Ruby Rudman does her best, but she sounds as if she has come over from the pop/rock world, and she should not have attempted such obvious songs as "Georgia on My Mind" and "Every Day I Have the Blues." So overall, this is a sincere and swinging but rather derivative effort by a fine local band.
