Joyce Breach is indeed a songbird; backed by the Jerry Melaga Trio, Breach's classy voice caresses 12 pop standards as lovingly as a mother cradles a newborn. However, except for "You and Me," "Peel Me a Grape," "I Believe in You," "That's All," and "Lady Sings the Blues" -- her heartiest vocal -- the arrangements are redundant and indistinguishable from one another. An unusual CD in that it gets stronger as it tracks along. A little attitude would give Breach's recordings more substance; she sings straight-forward with little vocal drama.
