Sonar 2002 Review

by Kingsley Marshall

With the Miami Music Conference increasingly populated by chancers and Europe's MIDEM conference more an industry shindig, so Barcelona's Sonar International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art has grown to become one of the worlds most influential electronic music festivals. As with the 2001 volume, Sonar 2002 comes beautifully packaged, emblazoned with celebrity icon Maradonna splitting the 20 tracks from artists featured at the festival into two CDs, with the more abstract electronics marked "By Day" while the "By Night" section warms up the dancefloors with a pick of house-orientated works. Reflecting the festival itself, the track listing offers a mix of household names counting Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, and Si Begg amongst their numbers; lesser-known artists; and a scattering of exclusives from the likes of Arthur Baker and the superb brainstorm from Tuxedomoon and DJ Hell, which closes the second disc.
