On Something Must Be Transmitted Somehow, the Athens, GA-based Eskimos move away from the rootsier flair of their previous effort. This time around the group is swamped in splashy, glammy Brit rock, with Bolan-esque guitars lathered all over the LP. "Something out of Nothing" boasts a clotted cream layer of guitars that sounds like something Noel Gallagher's been trying to achieve for years. The similarly glammy "Can You Hear Me" filters the group's Brit rock tendencies through Pavement-like shifts. But the highlight has to be the beautifully succinct, crashing power pop of "The Rodgering," which features a punkish, Clash-meets-Soul Asylum vocal line and sweet, stinging leads. This album is a captivatingly rich guitar statement.
