Trumpeter Ulf Adaker's post-bop set uses a very interesting instrumentation (trumpet, piano, bass, drums, and an improvising string quartet) and a repertoire that mixes in four of his colorful originals with songs by Ornette Coleman (a memorable rendition of "Blues Connotation"), Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento, and Thelonious Monk ("Little Rootie Tootie"). Of the originals, "Vers Minuit" is based very loosely on "'Round Midnight" and "The Bill" is a jam by Adaker with the rhythm section on a chord pattern inspired by Bill Evans. Throughout the date, Ulf Adaker's arrangements for strings are colorful and unpredictable and his trumpet playing is quite solid. This obscure CD is a bit of a sleeper, but well worth taking a chance on.
