The music on this live session was released for the first time on this 1993 CD from the Scottish Hep label. The versatile Tony Coe, who would play in freer settings later in his career, heads a quartet also including pianist Brian Lemon, bassist Dave Green and drummer Phil Seaman. Coe, switching between tenor (where he sometimes recalls Paul Gonsalves) and clarinet, comes across as a fairly distinctive and fresh bop-based player on these mid-'60s performances, introducing his "Aristotle Blues" and "Some Other Autumn" and coming up with inventive statements on such tunes as "Body and Soul," "Perdido" and "In a Mellow Tone." This CD offers listeners a strong example of Tony Coe's early playing.
