As its title states, the music on this set is primarily blues and ballads. The great pianist Jessica Williams, who is joined by bassist Dave Captein and drummer Mel Brown, is swinging and typically witty on these explorations. Even the ballads have enough forward momentum to always hold onto one's attention. Among the highlights are "You Don't Know What Love Is," "Blue Miles," "Mr. Johnson," and "Simple Things." Williams wrote five of the eight selections and, combined with the three standards, the music pays attention to tempo and mood variations. A fine effort.
